The Crime of Father Amaro (El Crimen del Padre Amaro) is a Mexican-Spanish drama film directed by Carlos Carrera. It was released in 2002 and is based on the novel of the same name by Portuguese author José Maria Eça de Queirós.
The movie tells the story of a young, idealistic priest named Father Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) who is sent to a small town in Mexico to become the assistant to the aging Priest Benito (Sancho Gracia). Father Amaro soon discovers corruption and scandal in the church, and becomes involved in a forbidden affair with a young woman named Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancón). The affair leads to tragic consequences, as Father Amaro struggles with his conscience and the moral implications of his actions.
The film was controversial at the time of its release, as it portrays the Catholic Church in a negative light and tackles sensitive issues such as corruption and sexual abuse. It was a critical and commercial success, winning numerous awards including the Ariel Award for Best Picture.
